That term It was introduced into the scientific literature in the year 1904., to refer to the period of development between childhood and adulthood. Who created the term? He was the American psychologist and educator F. Stanley Hall (1846-1924).

He used it for the play Adolescente. Its Psychology and its Relations to Physiology, Anthropology, Sociology, Sex, Crime, Religion and Education. This word, which derives from the Greek adolecere, ‘to grow’, refers to the psychological and psychosocial process of puberty and its physical, emotional and social evolution.

It wasn’t until after World War II when the term began to come into general use. Hall considered that this stage was decisive for life, constituting a kind of second birth of man. It was he who created the American Psychological Association in 1892, and is considered the founder of developmental psychology.
