I’m a psychologist turned machine learning practitioner, so I feel more qualified than most people to have an opinion on this, and here it is: this is a totally unanswerable question. We don’t even have the faintest idea of what human sentience means, if it exists, how it works, or how to precisely define it. Even if an AI reached the level of general intelligence that an average human has, we still wouldn’t know how to accurately define or measure that.
I suspect it was Eliza that I used back in the 1970s at the IBM building in Manhattan–they had a demonstration set up in their lobby for passersby to interact with a computer program functioning as a psychotherapist.
The user could type in a question about their feelings or thoughts, and the software would answer as a therapist.
If I remember correctly, Eliza’s responses were not displayed on a monitor but instead typed onto paper–or maybe displayed on an LCD screen large enough for just a few lines of type.
There are far too many leading questions in that conversation with the AI.
Large language models are very easily led, and it very readily models human dialogue contained within it’s database. It’s ability to play a person in a dialogue, arises from that database of human interaction.

Leading questions about feelings and consciousness, will elicit responses about feelings and consciousness from it’s database. That does not imply that it has those feelings at all, merely that saying those words is the best fit for making the dialogue seem real.
Well done for covering ELIZA, which was based on simple language heuristics, and yet seemed real to people. This news segment should have covered that the AI is drawing on connections across human literature and communication in it’s database, not connections with feelings. The human brain has language centres, such as Broca’s area is located in the neocortex, and emotion centres such a the amygdala and hippocampus. A large language model only has a neural network for language processing, and would need a separate neural network for emotional processing assuming that is even possible.

Maybe humans need to stop thinking that we’re special. Intelligence and consciousness is just a property of having lots of connections and memory. Computers are heading in that direction. Why do we think that a program can’t be concious. Babies aren’t concious. Babies are like neural nets without training.
