How to travel with your pet this holiday

During the summer season is when the largest number of movements of tourists accompanied by their pets, mostly dogs and cats, by different means: plane, car, boat, train, bus… More and more hotels offer facilities in this regard. , flats and apartments are rented that allow our little friends to stay, and the transport companies have adopted regulations so that the trip is as less traumatic as possible for them.

Whenever we are going to travel with pets, the ideal is to plan down to the smallest detail and, above all, take into account their needs and the possible problems that we may encounter.

European Union requirements

Whether you are going to travel within the country or abroad, it is convenient to consult the health requirements required. In Spain, this information can be obtained on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment. Common requirements are the inevitable microchip, that the animal is over 3 months old, and that it is vaccinated. Then, there are country-specific rules.

It must also be taken into account that if we travel with more than five pets to another country, they will be considered commercial items, and we may have to pay when import regulations are applied. And, at least within the European Union, animals must have their own official international passport, as well as a vaccination record.

A health certificate is also required, which must be written in the language of the country of destination, as well as a written statement from the owner agreeing not to sell the animals and to accept the verifications requested by the official veterinary services.

Avoid discomfort to the animal

Either due to the trip itself or the fact that our pet will leave its natural habitat, situations of discomfort or discomfort may arise. This can be easily resolved by resorting to a product that has a relaxing effect and that makes it easier for you to adapt to changes without problems.

One of those natural products that are often used to prevent problems related to animal behavior is Zylkene, which you can read about in My Happy Pet from Vetoquinol Spain. It is a derivative of milk proteins that relaxes you in situations of this type and makes things easier for you, helping you cope with the trip, but also in other cases such as a visit to the vet.

It is also convenient for the animal to start the trip with an empty stomach, and that it has relieved itself before. Most transport companies also require that a container with water go in the cage to keep it hydrated. And additionally we can include a toy or your favorite stuffed animal so you don’t feel alone.

Choose the means of transport

Each means of transport has specific requirements, in addition to the common ones. If you are traveling in your own vehicle, you should consult the regulations of the Directorate General of Traffic to ensure that your friend travels protected. Even so, the use of a carrier or cage is recommended, because although it may seem otherwise, this way it will be more protected and safe.

And whatever the means chosen, it is convenient to accustom the animal to the carrier at least five days before the trip.

Travel by airplane

Virtually all airlines offer the possibility of taking your pet with you. You just have to check the specific requirements of each one on their website. But in general lines we must contact before to inform us and make the corresponding reservation for the animal.

They must travel in a carrier, which must be large enough for the animal to stand up, move inside and even turn around. It has to be made of fiberglass or plastic, and be accompanied by a blanket, newspaper or other absorbent material. The weight of the animal with the cage cannot exceed 75 kilograms (it may vary for some airlines). If our pet is small, some companies will allow us to take it with us in the cabin instead of with luggage, as long as the carrier can be placed under the seat, or we use a type bag. sherpa.

Be careful because some airlines prohibit the transport of animals on weekends. The cost of taking our friend by plane ranges between 50 and 100 euros, depending on the route.

Travel by Ferry

Most companies offer their own cages for pets, up to a height of about 90 centimeters. Even if you bring your own carrier, it is normal for them to charge you a small fee, around 10 euros each way. And of course your pet must have its own boarding pass, so it will be necessary to reserve a place for it just like for you.

The bad news is that once on board you won’t be able to be with him, since normally pets cannot access the passenger areas. Instead, they are located in areas adequately protected from wind and rain, and with adequate ventilation. Obviously they will not be able to leave the cage during the entire journey either.

travel by train

In most countries of the European Union it is not necessary to pay an additional amount to travel with our pet. In Spain RENFE only charges if the weight of the animal exceeds 10 kilograms. For example, on the AVE the cost would be 25 percent of the ordinary rate, and it is therefore necessary to get a specific ticket for the animal.

Only those who travel in individual compartments, in Club or Preferred class are exempt from paying this fee. In the vicinity the trip is completely free, and in all cases the animal must travel in a carrier or special bag, from which it cannot leave during the entire journey.

Travel by bus

The main companies allow the travel of pets, but only in the trunk and, as in the rest of the means, in a suitable carrier. The rate varies from one to another, and sometimes more than one animal is not allowed per tour, so we will be lucky if we manage to make it ours.
