How to Use Essential Oils for Laundry

If you’re looking for a more natural and eco-friendly way to give your laundry a fresh scent, essential oils are a great solution. There are many ways to use essential oils for laundry, such as adding a few drops to your unscented liquid detergent, creating your own fabric softener by mixing essential oils with water, and using scented dryer balls instead of chemical-filled dryer sheets. You can also make your own essential oil blends to suit your personal preference and needs. When choosing essential oils, lighter and colorless oils like citrus scents are great for adding a revitalizing smell to your clothes. Lavender oil is a calming choice for bed sheets and pajamas, while tea tree and eucalyptus can offer a clean aroma and natural disinfectant properties. Always be careful when using essential oils as they are highly concentrated and should be kept away from skin and eyes. With these tips, you can enjoy fresh-smelling laundry without using harsh chemicals.

Can You Make Laundry Detergent at Home?

You can create a spotless home by producing environmentally friendly powdered laundry detergents. So, what can be used?

Ecological Powder Laundry Detergent

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon borax
  • 1 tablespoon washing soda
  • 1/2 tablespoon baking soda

Mix all the ingredients. Then add the mixture to your washing machine detergent dispenser and start washing your laundry.

You can also add a measure of natural olive oil soap shavings to this. For colored laundry, you can use two measures. At this point, the amount of borax and washing soda can be reduced by half a tablespoon.

Ecological Liquid Laundry Detergent

Ingredients:

  • 1 liter of water
  • 1 bar of olive oil soap shavings or 1 cup of Castile soap
  • 1/2 cup of borax
  • 1 cup of washing soda

Boil a liter of water in a saucepan. Add the finely grated soap to the boiling water and stir. Dissolve the grated soap.

After it has dissolved, continue stirring by adding washing soda and borax to the saucepan. The liquid detergent will be ready once it has homogenized. When it cools down, you can transfer it to a container and use it.

If it thickens, you can add a little water to adjust the consistency.

Hand Washing Laundry

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of natural soap shavings
  • 1 cup of washing soda
  • 1/2 cup of borax
  • 2 cups of apple cider vinegar
  • 10 drops of any essential oil

Mix soap shavings, washing soda, and borax in a bowl. In another bowl, mix vinegar and essential oil. Use half a cup of soap mixture for hand washing. For rinsing, you can add half a cup of the vinegar mixture.

Sweat Stain Removing Detergent

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 5 drops of eucalyptus or lemon essential oil

Combine all the ingredients and mix well. Then, apply the mixture to the stain.

Gently scrub the stain with a soft cloth or toothbrush and wash.

How to Soak Sweat-Stained Clothes?

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 6 drops of tea tree essential oil

Place the sweat-stained clothes in a basin of warm water and soak. Add the mixture of vinegar, lemon juice, and tea tree oil. Let it soak for another hour. Wash the clothes with natural powder or liquid detergent in the machine.

How to Add Essential Oils to Your Laundry Routine

If you’re looking for a natural way to add fragrance to your laundry, essential oils are your answer! Adding essential oils to your laundry is easy and can give your clothes a boost of scent without using harsh chemicals. Begin by choosing the essential oil you want to use. Consider the scents you like and what purpose you want them to serve. For example, lavender is perfect for sheets and towels while lemon and grapefruit can help with odor and grease. Once you’ve chosen your oil, add two or three drops to your unscented laundry detergent and shake well. You can also make your own blend by mixing different oils. Don’t worry about the oils leaving a stain on your clothes, as pure essential oils won’t do that. And, if you’re feeling creative, you can even make your own chemical-free fabric softener or linen spray using essential oils.

Can Laundry Softeners Be Made from Essential Oils?

Lavender Oil Softener

Ingredients:

  • 4 liters of white vinegar
  • 20 drops of lavender oil

Pour the vinegar into a container and add the lavender oil on top. Stir this natural product before each use and add one cup to the softener dispenser.

Lemon Oil Softener

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups of white vinegar
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 1 cup of water
  • 15 drops of lemon essential oil as fragrance

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Add a cup of this mixture to the softener dispenser of the machine.

With these natural and environmentally friendly cleaning products, you can maintain a clean and healthy home without the need for harsh chemicals. Not only will your laundry smell wonderful, but you’ll also be contributing to a cleaner environment for future generations.
