There are many ways to get around New York: the subway, buses, bicycles, and more recently, electric scooters (mopeds). The fashion for electric mopeds has finally arrived in the city. To help you decide if riding a moped might be for you, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know, including some helpful tips.
How does Reveal work?
Revel is a provider of shared electric mopeds in New York and Washington DC Renting rides works similar to the CitiBike concept. In both cases, users only need an application to rent the vehicles. Revel allows scooter riding within specified zones in the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. Compared to CitiBikes, there are no designated parking spaces or docks to park your Revel. You can park the electric moped in any legal parking space where the next cyclist picks it up. Currently there are 1,000 Revel mopeds on the market.
In addition to the charged electric moped, you will have:
- phone holder
- two helmets
- storage pod
Enrollment in Revel
Step 1: Download the Revel app on your phone
Step 2: Enter all the required information (include a photo of the valid license)
Step 3: Wait until you receive an email confirming your activation
How to Reveal
- Locate: open the app and find the nearest electric moped on the map
- Booking: once booked, you have 15 minutes to get to your moped and start it. If you don’t arrive on time, the reservation simply expires and someone else can take it
- To unlock: select the number of people who will drive and activate the moped
- Get prepared: Put on your helmet, get on the electric moped and set up the navigation. I recommend the Waze app to get around. The Revel app does not include navigation. Since driving on motorways is not allowed, it is smarter to change the preferences to avoid motorways automatically
Check the moped before starting the trip!
Make sure the moped is not damaged. Any damage must be reported through the app.
- Start the trip: enjoy driving and be safe!
- Park: park the moped following the parking tips provided in the app
- Finish the journey: return the helmets, close the helmet cover and press the finish button
I would even suggest taking a photo after the ride is over just in case something happens to the electric moped after you’ve parked it. You are responsible for the moped up to 24 hours after parking it. I have never had any problems but I prefer to play it safe.
Revel pricing is straightforward. After signing up, you pay an activation fee of $1 followed by $0.25 per minute. Here’s a more detailed breakdown.
- Registration = $19
- Trip activation = $1 – 2 (depending on the number of passengers)
- Rate = $0.25 / minute
- Fee when pausing ride = $0.10 / minute
Use code “PCVBH” when you sign up and save $5 on your first ride!
Actual price example
This is an example of a price for a trip we recently took in Brooklyn, from DUMBO to Cobble Hill. Hopefully, it will give you a better idea of prices.
- 1.4 miles
- 20 minutes
- 2 people
The total price consists of the activation fee of $2 for two people and the time fee of $5 ($0.25 x 20 minutes).
It is worth mentioning that the cost per person decreases with two users. $7 for two people equals $3.50 per person. In general, the price is a little higher than that of a single trip on the metro ($2.75), however in some cases taking the electric moped is faster and in all cases more fun.
Just so you know: an Uber X for the same trip would run about $9.34.
Our Revel review
Revel is a fun way to get around town as long as you’re a safe driver. Navigating the streets of New York is not easy if you are not used to it. We recommend that you take advantage of the free scooter lessons offered by Revel before getting on the electric moped for the first time. Getting around on Revel mopeds can sometimes be faster and cheaper, but that’s not always the case. However, depending on your origin and destination, it can be a fun way to get around. Registration is easy and pricing is very straightforward.
