Santa Cruz de La Palma, capital of Isla Bonita

Santa Cruz de La Palma is located to the east of the Canary Island of La Palma. It is a historic city declared as a monumental complex. It is the capital of the island, although it is not the most populous city, since it is outnumbered by the nucleus of Llanos de Aridane, on the western slope.

However, here we are not talking about quantity, but quality. And the truth is that Santa Cruz de La Palma has many attractions of interest. We are going to talk about them.

Isla Bonita, Isla Verde, Isla Corazón

We are going to start by clarifying the different names with which this island is known. The most obvious is that of Isla Bonita, since it is enough to travel to La Palma to discover a most beautiful place. Also during the trip it is understood why it is called Green Island, and it is that it is surely the most wooded and leafy of the Canary archipelago.

How to get to Santa Cruz de La Palma

It is very easy to get to Santa Cruz de La Palma. In fact, somehow It is the gateway to the island. It is because of its seaport, where the ferry coming from other sister islands such as Tenerife or La Gomera, with which it is united by the splendor of ancient laurel forests, of which the maximum exponent is the Garajonay area of ​​La Gomera.

1. A walk down Calle Real

Any tour of Santa Cruz de La Palma has to include a walk along Calle Realwhich today is actually known as Pérez Brito and O’Daly Street.

It is curious that the main street of a Canarian capital bears the name of an Irishman, but in the 18th century this character led the movement that achieved that for the first time in Spain the rulers of the city were chosen by their citizens by voting.

In addition to discovering that history and imposing buildings left by the Indians, this street is perfect for shopping or try some of the Canarian gastronomy, in which fresh fish, gofio and tropical fruits are never lacking.

2. And then go through the Avenida Marítima

The large mansions of Santa Cruz de La Palma have their main facades facing the previous street, but many have a back that faces the Avenida Marítima. And paradoxically, there you can see the most spectacular of these constructions: their ancient wooden balconies painted in bright colors. This is one of the iconic images of the city.

3. The Spanish Steps

The fountain in the center is also Renaissance. While the great laurels of the Indies that adorn the square are less ancient, but they still arrived here from Cuba in the 19th century.

4. Alameda Square

And this walk through Santa Cruz de La Palma may well end in the Plaza de la Alameda, by the sea. In fact, the main attraction of this place is to see the Ship of the Virgin, an imitation of the caravels with which Columbus set off to discover other islands in the American continent. The ship is a museum dedicated to the Virgen de las Nieves, who is so fervent in the city.
