The desert that “exceeded” sand (Rub al-Khali)

It is not that it is a place enjoyed by thousands of tourists, nor is it a naturally hospitable territory in terms of climate and exuberance. There are 650,000 square kilometers of sand, an extension wider than all of Afghanistan and which I mention as a curiosity among the extreme places of our planet. A “sea” with so much sand in the Arabian Peninsula, that the region has been one of the most extensively dry, uninhabited and unexplored in the world, the largest continuous sand surface in the world:

In summer, temperatures can reach up to 55 degrees C, and not even the Bedouins have dared it for thousands of years. Desertification has progressed over the millennia, making it increasingly devoid of life (although arachnids, rodents or plants may even be found), so much so that it is literally called «empty room«, or more precisely, desert of Rub al Khali either al rabbi al khali.

It was barely explored recently, and has triggered legends based on accurate traces such as the lost city of ubar either iram. Just as an additional curiosity, in Rub al-Khali, or under that sea of sand, lies one of the largest reserves of fossil fuels on the planet. The area can be visited through guided excursions where orientation, in the absence of good references, remains in the hands of a GPS.
