The island of Valdecañas, an oasis in the steppe of Extremadura

Talking about Extremadura, in Spain, takes us mentally to go through wide pastures full of Iberian pigs, towns and cities with a lot of identity and people open to the world. But is it possible that among so much forest and agrarian tradition some other luxury resort has crept in? Of course, the island of Valdecañas, next to the reservoir of the same name, has turned this steppe area into a true oasis which has been in the media spotlight since its inception.

We show you the charms of this luxury island, located at the eastern end of the province of Cáceres and the tourist possibilities of this beautiful rural area of deep Spain.

The charms of the steppe of Extremadura

This region, located to the west of the Iberian Peninsula, has been since ancient times linked to everything related to the field. Here agricultural production is one of the most intense in the country. For this reason, it is common for most of its towns, and even some agro-cities, to base their entire economy on the primary sector.

The Isla de Valdecañas tourist complex stands next to the reservoir of the same name, nestled in the Tagus River, and is one of the largest reservoirs in Spain. In fact, its basin has an area of 36,540 square kilometers, with an average annual contribution of 4,054 cubic hectometres.

This begins in the municipality of El Gordo and ends at the Valdecañas dam, in Belvís de Monroy, both in the province of Cáceres. Its construction was carried out between 1957 and 1964, and under its waters there is a Bronze Age site with a dolmen that emerges when the waters recede.

It is the megalithic complex of the Guadalperal dolmen, Also known as “the Spanish Stonehenge”, due to its resemblance to the Stonehenge cromlech. The latter is a megalithic monument located near Amesbury, in the county of Wiltshire, England.

The island of Valdecañas, in constant controversy

The urbanization of this luxury resort —projected with 360 villas, 2 4 and 5-star hotels, a swimming pool area and an artificial beach with sea sand, as well as a marina and a golf course— settled in a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA), with the approval of the Junta de Extremadura.

However, after the denunciation of environmental groups, was declared illegal by the Spanish Justice. Thus, the construction was paralyzed in the middle and its demolition has been flying over and pending a ruling from the Superior Court of Justice of Extremadura. This had to determine if the island has to return to its natural state or if executing this decision would cause more harm than good.

In any case, and despite all the legal ups and downs that this complex has gone through since the laying of its first stone, continues to be operational and open to tourism uninterruptedly.

A resort with all kinds of luxuries

This tourist complex offers a unique and privileged location. It is located just an hour and a half from Madrid, next to the Sierra de Gredos and the Monfragüe National Park, both 50 kilometers away, and it is ideal for enjoying one of the most complete golf courses in Extremadura. In addition, it is a short distance from the emblematic town of El Gordo, surrounded by a natural environment of 133 hectares.

Is about an authentic haven of relaxation and nature where you can disappear for a few days to enjoy the true pleasures of life. Undoubtedly, the island of Valdecañas is a perfect natural territory for getaways and for practicing sports in the open air.
