The “lost world” of Nubra, in India

you can follow us on Twitter @101places

Nubra It is an isolated valley and even closed to outsiders, a place far from any travel route and accessible by a road that represents the highest altitude pass on the planet, frozen most of the year (even in summer). It is another place in India that reminds me of the little known area of Zanskar. Nubra is a desert space walled in by the Cordillera del karakorumand modeled by the Shyok River that sustains much of life, including the ancient cultures that inhabit it.

In its extension, there are rocky deserts, incredible dune areas and environments with grasslands where Bactrian camels graze, but above all, landscapes that sometimes they look like postcards from another planet. Nubra was part of the Ladakh region, the “land of causeways” often called “Little Tibet” because of its indigenous appearance and culture.

Curiously, despite its arid and even inhospitable appearance, its original name (Ldumra) refers to a “valley of flowers”, although it is actually a strange high-altitude desert, where rainfall is scarce, as is than the vegetation that only sprouts along the riverbeds.

Access Nubra Valley This is not an easy task for two reasons: there is only one path to Nubra Valley (although another one was being finished a couple of years ago), a highway at height, but also, there are access restrictions in certain areas for non-residents, especially since it is a border area. The permitted stay is only seven days, and it is advisable to reserve guest houses in advance, especially in summer when demand increases.

From Leh, the ancient capital of the kingdom of Ladakh, the route to Nubra departs in what is now the province of Jammu and Kashmir, a harsh passage that even in summer is covered by a layer of ice.

“The usual way to access the valley is to go to Khardung La from Leh, where you first cross the Shyok Valley. To enter the Nubra Valley, you must cross the Shyok River via a small bridge and pass a military checkpoint. It is necessary to have a pass for the “Inner Line” to allow access to this region.” (Wikipedia)

The Nubra Valley It is barely dotted with some towns, where its inhabitants turn to agriculture. In the limited fertile areas, they grow apples, cereals and fruits typical of the region, such as the orange berries they obtain from the tsestalulu. Most of them belong to the Ladakhis ethnic group, of the Buddhist religion, although there are also other ethnic minorities such as the Sunnis.

Some of the most interesting towns to visit are Sumur, Diskit, Hundar and Panamik. In all of them, we will find ourselves surrounded by dunes, mountains and snow-capped mountains, but above all, wrapped in a silence and tranquility that is difficult to find.
