The magic of reaching Petra through the gorge (The siq) #TravelRelationship

Reach a hidden place, discover it. To be a child again. Or discover that we never stop being. Walking through a gorge, “the axis” or the door that leads to an unknown world. Little more than a kilometer between narrow steps that sometimes do not exceed three meters. Somewhere lost in the mountains was hidden the ancient city of Petra during centuries. The people of the valley preferred not to tell about it, not to reveal a path between walls of reddish rock up to 180 meters high that led to a city carved into the mountain. And even if they did tell, it wouldn’t be easy to believe.

the passage through the Siq it was sacred, and it still has that mysticism. Walking through it dazzles, nature models sinuous forms of disproportionate scale, the sunlight multiplies and the reddish color stains the entire environment.

At times, when walking through the Siq you are completely alone, and it even seems that nothing and no one else exists in the world. At times, groups of tourists large or small transform the gorge into a pedestrian path in the middle of nowhere.

They are bursts of noise and silence, footsteps are heard, horses and carts that advance but are not seen, and resound with their echo in the gorge. And when they pass they raise dust, and that reddish light seems more intense. It’s not magic, but it looks like it. All the magic of a trip, all our dreams of adventure, of going out to explore, of surrendering to the place, all these sensations are multiplied in that majestic entrance to the ruins of Petra.

And in this continuous advance, the city of Petra is anticipated in adjusted doses. In the Siq, and before entering it, there are already carved ruins, temples, aquifers also carved into the cliffs and that carried water to the city. There are remains of an entrance and an arch that are now gone, and underground chambers that are believed to have been used by guards who defended the entrance to the city. The magic anticipates and fires.

If we moved away, if we flew over the valley, we probably wouldn’t see Petra. It is hidden among capricious forms in the arabah valleyand definitely, finding her was not easy:

The path continues until it reaches a point where everyone stops. And that is the reaction when encountering the silhouette of “El Tesoro”, embedded in a carved rock facade facing the gorge. stop. Observe it. Feeling that something is being discovered, even though a thousand photos are shot per second of that place every day. There is The treasure, and another stage of the adventure to begin. The one that involves walking through a lost city that opens in a valley. Carved and monumental ruins enclosed in an easy to defend site, a place that allowed the heyday of a dazzling civilization (that of the Nabataeans), which later fell into disrepair, and which waited until 200 years ago to be known to the world again.

The Swiss explorer, Jean Luis Burckardt, “discovers” Petra in 1812, and perhaps, he will have had sensations so similar to those of every tourist that he is stunned at the sight of the carved Treasury. Maybe so similar to mine. Stop and freeze and gape between walls of a narrow, imposing gorge. A door that connects the fast-paced, hyper-connected, changing and sometimes overwhelming world with a world frozen in time, hidden, mythical, dusty. Nature and man hand in hand, to do wonders that words do not have the power to describe nor photos the ability to dimension. A city that is just beginning to unfold.
