these are the most dangerous roads

Despite globalization, the evolution and democratization of means of transport that are increasingly faster and reduce the distance between the starting point and destination, there are still many who prefer to take the car when they arrive on vacation. And this fact entails a series of preventive measures and exhaustive inspection of the vehicle, especially if you do not have roadside assistance insurance – and even if you do!-.

Every year, at the end of June, travel forecasts for the summer come out in our country. The roads, despite the large number of AVE lines and the proliferation of cheaper flights, continue to be one of the preferred alternatives for travelers, especially for those who are going to move to other Spanish cities.

This year, the DGT forecast some 89 million trips on the road in June and released its special traffic device with the well-known awareness and accident prevention campaigns, with useful recommendations as every year and which it is worth repeating since, although incident numbers are down compared to the last 10 years, there is still a lot of work to be done.

Thus, the Minister of the Interior, Juan Ignacio Zoido, said at the end of June at a press conference that road trips for this summer increased by 4.6% compared to 2016. We will have to see the balance in September-October, taking considering that August has not yet arrived, which is the star month for overnight stays and, therefore, in terms of road trips. In this sense, it is estimated that some 43.5 million are carried out in July and 2 million more in August.

Last summer, the roads were the scene of the death of 253 people in accidents that occurred between July and August. This figure is the worst recorded since 2012. And, although these data are framed in a context in which there were also four million more displacements than in 2015, it should not be a reality that prevents us from seeing what the problems are and how the message of road safety standards, formulated tirelessly, summer after summer, has not yet permeated society.

The departure time, copious meals, stopping every two hours or every 200 kilometers… are some of the recommendations that have been repeated over and over again.

Not to mention the consumption of alcohol, drugs and narcotics. As much as the DGT has launched campaigns in this regard, there is no year in which, in summer due to parties or in winter due to company dinners, there is news of an accident that monopolizes all our attention in the media. And it is that the human factor is responsible for almost more than 90% of traffic accidents that occur on our roads every year.

Many of these accidents could be easily prevented if the recommendations were followed. Every year there are studies on the causes and a high rate has to do with the fact that the driver has not stopped when it was his turn and has fallen asleep at the wheel.

Driving requires great concentration and, never better said, requires our five senses, so we must be extremely responsible, not for ourselves and for those who accompany us, but also for the rest of those who circulate in the same place as We.

If driving requires great concentration, driving through the so-called black spots or dangerous sections requires it even more. The organization EuroRAP (European Road Assessment Programme), in which the Spanish RACE participates, reveals in its latest report some of the points on Spanish roads, as well as those of other member countries, with a higher accident rate.

The point with the highest accident rate is located on the N -435 Badajoz, between km. 33 and 45.9, having been the scene of five serious accidents with three deaths. Then, in the north on the N-120 Lugo, between km. 535.2 and 549.5, a total of 8 serious accidents occurred last year, with no fatalities.

Also heading north are the third and fourth geographical points with the highest concentration of accidents. The first is located on the N 630 – Asturias, between km. 66.6 and 87.1. Along this section, there were 10 accidents last year, again, fortunately, without fatalities.

The fourth place is occupied by the N-547 during a 10 kilometer route, between km. 47.5 and 54.8. The fifth is located on the N-260 of Lleida, between km. 193.9 and 204.4, having produced 7 accidents in 2016 with one death.

On these roads and on the following ones in the ranking that can be consulted in the EuroRAP, extreme caution should be exercised. At the wheel you never have to lower your guard.
