About the beaches of Cape Verde
Consisting of 10 main islands and eight islets smaller off the west coast of Africa, Cape Verde is an archipelago with much to offer tourists, whether they are looking for a relaxing beach holiday, great surfing, or a hiking trip in volcanic and mountainous terrain. Sal, the main tourist island, has wonderful sandy beaches to rival any in the world as well. Fantastic surf and dive spots.
Beach:
There is no shortage of great beaches in Cape Verde. The stunning long white beaches running in any direction from Santa Maria, Sal’s main town, is a good place to catch the Rays of the Suns. The beaches in Boa Vista are ideal for water sports with everything from diving to sailing. The island also has one of the largest and best beaches in the archipelago, Curralinho. Sao Pedro beach in São Vicente is also charming and a good place for windsurfing. Sal is considered to be the Adice pair of surfers because of the constant breezes coming in from the north.
Beyond the beach:
Trekking is one of the great activities in Cape Verde. The most popular island among walkers is Santo Antao, due to its spectacular landscapes. The island has a vast mountain range that offers great views and a wonderfully diverse flora, and in the interior of the island there are green valleys and fertile forests, while the coast is robbed. There are several marked trails on the island, but it is also possible to hire a guide for your walking tour.
Family fun:
The resorts in Sal have enough facilities for families and the beaches of Santa María are excellent for children, with their fine white sand. On some of the islands, it is possible to do a bit of bird and turtle spotting without intruding too much on their habitats, and in São Vicente and Santiago it is possible to go on horseback.
Exploring more:
Fogo, which means “fire” in Portuguese, is a volcanic island southwest of São Tiago, and its volcano, Pico de Fogo, rises 2,839 million (9,314FT) up. the sea level. The cone is one of the best in the world, and the summit offers fantastic views. There are good trails around the volcano, but it’s a good idea to go on an organized tour, not least because the volcano is occasionally active. (the last eruption happening in 1995).

Best for families – Boa Vista thanks to its selection of blue flag beaches, clear sands and clean water, is a great place to take the kids. You can sail out to sea on a boat trip and spend some time exploring the pretty capital of Sal Rei. For a family hotel, look no further than Riu Karamboa.
What is the best island in Cape Verde?
For me, Santo Antão is the most visually impressive of all the islands. It is popular with hikers and anyone who loves to get close to nature. Despite having some of the most stunning scenery you could hope to find anywhere in the world, it’s only a few sight-seeing, so it still feels like a true hidden gem.
There are three COVID CAPE Green certificates, one showing the holder has been vaccinated, one showing the holder has recovered from COVID-19, and one showing evidence of a negative COVID test.
