I’ve heard from multiple Japanese speakers that it’s actually translated as microcrystal steel and it just means the particles themselves in the steel are way smaller making it stronger and giving a couple other benefits.
Side armor is always important. If you get the enemy on the run you will need to go on the offensive. A few grunts with ATGM’s could take out a bunch of your tanks from the sides.
By building your own tank you also build a skilled workforce with all the benefits that they bring to the local and national economy.
The type 10 is my personal favourite modern tank and i really hope my A levels and degree goes well as it would be the dream to work for mitsubishi heavy industries on insane vehicles like this.
With all of the small-width roads in Japan (other than Shinkansen railway and the intra-island high speed highway), like the medieval roads and cart-width roads in Europe, small battle tanks fighting in the towns and rural areas, these tanks are more viable than anything huge and bulky like an American Abrams, British Challenger, or German Leopard. They would be highly applicable also in S Korea, N Korea, Taiwan, Okinawa, smaller Ryuku island chain running toward Taiwan in the Central and South Pacific islands – especially taking over all of the new Chinese manmade islands (that are all disintegrating and sliding into the sea …) and those of the American protectorate islands of the Pacific.
I think it’s an odd thing to take the strategically defensive nature of the armed forces as meaning the tank will ONLY be used with defensive tactics. Counter-attacks are an important part of a good defense, and the tanks would no doubt be crucial in that role if they were defending the Japanese homeland.
